As the scale of construction of structures expands, their configuration becomes more complicated, the number of analytical member elements becomes larger and the number of design variables and constraints increases. It would be better to develop an optimum design using suboptimization, so that the number of design variables and constraints can be decreased. In a method of optimum design using suboptimization, it is necessery to obtain the optimum values of design variables of individual sections of member elements. It is necessary to select the most economical and precise computation. As examples of optimum design, the comparison of methods for design of continuous trusses includes the SLP, the SUMT and the feasible direction methods.
