Parasite infections have been shown to induce alteration in the immune responsiveness of host, including the immunosuppression. Such alterations are of obvious potential importance in the pathogenesis of parasitic infections, development of the acquired resistance and a long term survival of parasite in the host. The mechanisms involved have been studied well in some parasitic infections such as malaria, trypanosomiasis, toxoplasmosis, schistosomiasis and trichinosis, but the subject remains still unclear. The speculations have centered on the activation of suppressor cells (T- tymphocytes and macrophages), exhaustion of lymphocyte responsiveness following the polyclonal lymphocyte activation and alteration of macrophage function in the presentation of antigen. Besides these speculations, several findings have been interpreted variously as the manifestations of suppressor products released by parasites, and the induction of anti-thymocyte autoantiboies by polyclonal B lymphocyte activation has also been suggested to play a role in the development of generalized immunosuppression. It can be clearly pointed out, however, that the complex fectors originated in parasite itself and unique immunostimulatory forms of parasitic infections take part as a very significant factor in the occurrence of the immune alterations. It is surmised that the altered immune responsiveness plays an important role in the completion of "host-parasite relationships", and further analytical studies must be continued in relation with the basic immunoregulatory mechanisms.
