The beam mode expansion method which is used to discuss the diffraction of a wave beam by an aperture is applied to the analysis of coupling between rectangular and circular wave beams through an aperture. The coupling coefficients are represented as an infinite series. The first term, however, gives a good approximation to the rigorous value of the coefficient except when the rectangular beam has an extremely oblong field distribution. Numerical results are shown for the coefficient between rectangular and circular fundamental beam modes. The optimum conditions which maximize the coefficient are also shown for various aperture radii and field configurations.
