Recently, high heat-input automatic welding process has been applied to welded structures. However, this high heat-input welding has an undesirable effect of adversely affecting the toughness of the weld bond at welded joints. In order to secure the safety of welded structures, therefore, the study on fracture toughness of welded joints by this welding process is one of important problems. In this experiment, the authors carried out hardness test, observation of microstructures, the Charpy V-notch impact test, COD bend test and fractrography with weld test specimens of mild and 50 kg/mm2 class high strength steels which were welded by electro-gas arc process with heat-input values of about 110 kj/cm~185 kj/cm. From the results of these tests, the mechanism of embrittlement was clarified and the characteristics of fracture toughness were evaluated on the weld bond of high heat-input welded joints.
