As is well known, the fluctuations of groundwater level in the aquifers in contact with the ocean or the river occur in reponse to tide or to correlative change of stream storage. The problem has been solved by analogy to heat conduction in a semi-infinite solid subject to periodic temperature normal to the infinite dimension. The available solution which is derived from the approximate partial differential equation of groundwater level fluctuation in unconfined aquifers consisting of two zones of different coefficients of permeability (Fig.1) is used for the analysis of groundwater movement. The coefficient of permeability in each zone can be determined by this solution. The effects of the zone such as the dike or reclaimed land contiguous to the sea or the river on the inland groundwater level are elucidated. The solution is applied to the analysis of the data of groundwater level observation in situ.
