Hendiadys is a rhetorical device to conjoin two nouns or two adjectives by and instead of ordinary constructions as 'adjective+noun' and 'adverb+adjective.' 'Noum+and+noun' in hendiadys should be interpreted as 'adjective+noun' in meaning, and similariy 'adjective+and+adjective' as 'adverb+adjective'. Hendiadys deserves more thoughtful attention than it has been given, for Shakespeare uses it far more freely and frequently than has been thought ― over three hundred times in all, mainly in the great plays of his middle career and most in Hamlet. Furthermore, the peculiar structure of hendiadys is native enough to Shakespeare's style, and so apt to his purposes, that any scholar or teacher of the plays may find it helpful to recognize this figure as one characteristic of Shakespearean manner. In this thesis,we would like to analyze the structure of hendiadys and to investigate Shakespeare's hendiadys with special reference to Hamlet referring to George T. Wright's thesis 'Hendiadys and Hamlet'(1981 ).
