Subjacency/ECP distinction made in the Barriers'(Chomsky(1986)) theory for the analysis of the adjunct condition effect must be renovated in the current framework of Minimalism. Chomsky's (2001b,2005)analysis of adjuncts as pair-merged elements treats adjuncts as absolute barriers to extraction contrary to the fact; While adjuncts cannot be extracted out of adjuncts, extraction of arguments results in marginal acceptability. The analysis can be accommodated to this asymmetry in extraction by assuming that pair-merged adjuncts are treated virtually as strong phases in terms of the Phase Impenetrability Condition.
