論文This is the case study which focused on women who graduated "Catholic Convent School", when the school was first established, with a view on cultural reproduction. Catholic Convent schools came to Japan in Early Meiji, though the situation was extremely severe for Catholic nuns to start working in women's education until 1899(Meiji 32), when the Japanese Government promulgated a new ordinance which was the law for establishment of schools Catholic Convents were regarded as "The House for the Poor", for a long time. After the adoption of the law, big changes happened and from then on, Catholic Convent schools opened the new door which was the school for high society. On the other hand, the people who selected those schools also had strategy for their children's education. Their interest were, "Cosmopolitanism, Gender-maintainance, European aristocracy". Because the people who chose those schools belonged to the Japanese higher stratum. Some people already had international experience or some would have those chances in the near future. They eagerly let their children acquire cosmopolitanism. Also those parents, especially fathers, didn't want to let their girls learn about the women's movement as Protestant Missions promoted. Their final wish was that the circumstances should becovered with an aristocratic atmosphere. These conditions which parents desired were incorporated into Catholic Convent Schools. At the same time, the Convent's needs, in other words, to get permanent patronage also succeed. Demand and Supply made a good balance at the end of the Meiji era. The researcher obtained data from 16 interviews from women whose mothers were born in Meiji or Taisho era and who graduated from the same Catholic Convent School as their daughters. These interviews helped to proved the hypothesis which the researcher made. In this paper, also the researcher included old photograph with historical value and astatistic data which make clearer the situation in reality.
