Chinese characters ‘kai, ki, hen, kan’ are representative verbal Chinese derived morphemes. These four characters all have the meaning of ‘return’ in both Japanese and Chinese, but syntactic and semantic functions of the morphemes in the two languages are not always the same. By picking out the headwords which contain these four Chinese characters from dictionaries, and then analyzing the meanings and constituents, this paper intends to compare the differences of lexical productivity of these four characters between Japanese and Chinese.
