Fluorescence and excitation spectra of the rare-earth ions in Al2O3-SiO2 glass prepared by the sol-gel method are investigated. 5D emission intensities of Eu3+ and Tb3+ under the excitation of the f-f transition decreases with increasing the temperature. This observation leads to a conclusion that the radiative transitions of Eu3+ and Tb3+ are quenched by the high-frequency vibration of the coordinated O-H groups. Under the excitation of the f-d transition of Tb3+, 5D4 emission intensities increase with the temperature. This temperature dependence is attributed to the intersystem crossing between 5D4 state and the 4f75d1 state.
