オーストラリアにおける日本人居住者の母語教育に対する意識 : 日本語補習校でのアンケート調査結果からわかること

本稿は，オーストラリアのなかでも古くから英語以外の言語を母語とする移民が多く居住する，ビクトリア州メルボルンの日本語補習校で2007年に実施したアンケート調査から，日本人居住者の背景と母語教育に対する意識に焦点を当て，その傾向の抽出を試みたものである。過去10年間で，日本人居住者がオーストラリアに滞在する主な目的は，会社派遣から移住，国際結婚へと変化した。そしてそれに伴い，彼・彼女らが子どもを日本語補習校に通わせたい期間や身につけさせたい日本語のレベルもかつてに比べ多様化した。本稿では，永住者・非永住者の保護者と子どもが，具体的に，日本語・英語双方の言語の必要性をどのように捉えているのかを明らかにし，それが日本語補習校の意義・役割にどのような影響を与えているのかを考察した。
