The 93 patients with the malignant tumor in larynx were statistically observed during past six years and three months, since the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Department of the Ryukyus University Hospital was opened in April 1973. The results were follows: (1) We treated 10-20 patients with malignant laryngeal tumor for every year in past six years. (2) According to the sex of the patients, the male and female patients were respectively 90 and 3; the ratio of the male to female was 30 to 1. (3) According to the age of the patients, there were most in the sexagnarian, subsequently in the age of fifties and seventies. (4) With regard to the symptoms, hoarsness was mostly complained, subsequently cough, sputum, wheeze, dyspnoea, etc.. (5) The microscopical examinations revealed only a squamous cell carcinima; an adenoma or other non-epithelial tumors were not seen in this series. (6) Only about the half of the patients visited our clinic within six months after the onset of the symptoms. (7) Only eight patients visited our clinic in early stage of the tumor. We had to treat the patients almost in the progressed stage. (8) We treated the patients mainly with the operation, subsequently with the irradiation or the combination of the operation and the irradiation. The chemotherapy and the immunotherapy were carried out supplementally. (9) The rough survival rate for three years was 46.5%. These-statistics can be seen as those in the Ryukyu Islands, since our clinic is still now only one fully equipped clinic for the patients with ear, nose and throat diseases here in thses islands, where about one million of people are living. With thses statistics, we emphasis again the need of the discovery and treatment in the early stage of this disease in the Ryukyu Islands.
