Field tests of Altosid 10F^【○!R】 containing 10 % methoprene, a juvenile hormone analogue, against larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus, the important vector of Wuchereria bancrofti, were conducted from April 13, 1982 to January 6, 1983 in small ground pools at Nakachi, Tomigusuku and Ishimine, Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. The methoprene was sprayed at lppm three times in the stagnant drainage ditch at Nakachi and two times in the slow moving water pool at Ishimine. The persistance of effectiveness of methoprene for the mosquito pupae in water was determined by preventing emergence of mosquitoes. One hundred pupae of Cx. quinquefasciatus were collected from the pools and placed in small containers and dead individuals were counted. At Nakachi, emergence of Cx.quinquefasciatus collected before spray was 95%. The adult emergence of Cx. qmnquefasctatus was inhibited in pupal stage and mortality was more than 94 % during the first 17 days after the first spray, 38 days after the second spray and 66 days after the third spray. The 50 % mortality was estimated on 23rd day after the first spray, 43rd day after the second spray and 92nd day after the third spray. At Ishimine, the emergence of Cx. quinquefasciatus collected before spray was 97 %. The mortality was more than 96 % during the first 10 days after the first spray and 21 days after the second spray. The 50 % mortality was estimated on 22nd day after the first spray and 32nd day after the second spray. In the early days after spray, most mosquito mortality occurred in the pupal stage. As the days go on, however, the mortality attributed to the failure of emergence from the pupal skin increased gradually. Effectiveness of methoprene in the stagnant ditch was similar to that in the slow moving water pool after the first spray, but the duration of the effectiveness in the ditch was longer than that in the slow moving water pool after the second spray. The persistance of effectiveness of methoprene was significantly influenced by rainfall and conditions of breeding pools, such as water current and deposit in the bottom.
