Steroids are often administered clinically for neural compression injjury. This study examines the effects of steroids on the function and histology of rat sciatic nerve following compression injury. The rat sciatic nerve with a silicone cuff applied was used as a model of acute compression injury. The application of this model to the study of an acute neural injury is made possible by the use of the sciatic functional index as a means of seqluentially monitoring the nerve deficit. Treatment with dexamethasone from before cuff application prevented functional deficit, but the histological appearance of the nerves examined was similar in both dexamethasone and normal saline administration groups. This suggests that the effect of the steroid was to reduce the severity of the injury only sifficiently to allow continuing function of a portion of the neurons. This study provides experimental evidence to support the use of steroids in the treatment of neural compression injury, but indicates that the functional benefits may mask continuing neuronal injury.
