Aim of the present work is to study, whether chromium in urine (Cr-U) can be an exposure index in urban subjects. The epidemiological study was carried out in a part of the Ruhr district of Germany. From 260 children 2-6 years of age and 67 family volunteers living together with them 24-hours urine was collected. Residential histories were investigated and occupational histories of chromium exposure in older relatives at the time of the study were asked. Chromium was determined by the direct spectrometry of atomic absorption using heated graphite atomizer. There was a positive association of Cr-U in children by orderly rank of chromium deposit in their residential area. Cr-U increased significantly by age among subjects over 25 years, whereas no change was observed among children. Occupational exposure to chromium in the older relatives living together had no effect on Cr-U in children.
