論文/ArticlesOne of the most far-reaching consequences in the history of Jewish messianism was caused by the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century religious vortex: the Sabbateanism, whose kabbalistic and eschatological doctrine has been well known for its heretical and antinomian inclination, exerted a crucial influence upon some aspects of the contemporary Jewish law and practice. The followers of the long-awaited messiah, Sabbatai Tzevi, and the leading proponents of the movement not only changed the existing manners of traditional life and created a series of renewed ritual festivals but, especially after Tzevi’s apostasy in 1666, went so far as to develop clandestine and idiosyncratic messiology. The most important among them was Nathan of Gaza, a prophet and propagandist of the movement in the seventeenth century, on whose doctrine we will shed light in this paper. Gershom Scholem, a pioneer of the research on Sabbateanism, placed a considerable emphasis on the antinomian aspect of this messianism while paying due heed to the ascetic atmosphere which had preoccupied the followers’ minds before Tzevi converted to Islam. It may safely be said that the mainstream of the research in this field has shared Scholem’s view for many years. The writings of Nathan, however, indicate the presence of both kabbalistic and mitzvah-centric asceticism from the beginning of the movement and even after the messiah’s apostasy. While Nathan composed many an antinomian treatise to justify the messiah’s apostasy, we can find that his disciples kept the nomistic doctrine and the several statutory lists of recommended practices even in the period of persecution. The antinomian doctrine which would have allowed the pious believers to enter the coming aion and be spiritually redeemed seems to be incompatible with nomism based on their daily life. Despite a prima-facie contradiction between nomism and antinomism, it is possible to point out the common foundation in Nathan’s attitude toward the Jewish law and practice
