論文/Articles”Han” is a “feeling of sorrow” and a notion which Koreans perceive as a part of their ethnic identity, a unique emotion, and even a kind of beauty. Although ”han” has been studied for a long time in fields such as literature and psychology, it is also found in Korean Shamanism and folk religion that have been passed down since ancient times.//This paper discusses how “han” is interpreted in the teachings of the Unification Church, a new religion of Christian provenance established in 1960s. In this Church’s doctrine the concept of “han” has been incorporated in the image of both God and Jesus, and serves as the core of the teachings. This paper considers three kinds of “han”: the “han” of God, Jesus, and the chosen people.//In Unificationism, God is regarded as bearing ill feelings and having “han” since its original parent-child relationship with humans has been destroyed by the Satan. Jesus was born as a messiah who was to dispel God’s “han”, but he himself came to feel “han” as he was murdered before he was able to achieve his original purpose of starting a family. Furthermore, in Unificationism, Koreans are regarded as the chosen people who have lived in suffering throughout their history bearing “han,” and this suffering is considered as the very reason why they where chosen by God who himself bears “han”.
