八木秀夫教授定年退職記念号Hannah Arendt is one of the most influential political thinkers, who was born in 1906 and died in 1975. Though it has been more than thirty years since her death, many scholars in politics, political philosophy and sociology still pay attention to her works. The purpose of this paper is to read Arendt from the viewpoint of "love of the world", which is the phrase Arendt originally planed to title The Human Condition. This paper consists of the following chapters: Introduction: How do we read Arendt ? Chap.1: "Self-in-relation-to-others" Chap.2: plurality and loneliness Chap.3: Reality of the Common World and the Presence of Others Chap.4: Friendship and Distance Chap.5: Plurality / Sameness, Publicness / Communality Concluding Remarks By reading Arendt from such a perspective, I would like to make clear the importance of Arendt to grasp and resolve some problems in our contemporary society characterized by the decline of the common world. Arendt's thoughts are still alive.
