Using an in-laboratory constructed Cranz-Schardin camera, tests were attempted to simultaneously evaluate values of the dynamic fracture toughness KID by caustic and photoelastic methods for PMMA and Araldite B as a function of the fracture velocity ? It is shown from the results that in the first acceleration-deceleration stage of fracture each of KID-? curves obtained from both methods exhibited a histeresis similarly. Values of KID measured by both methods agreed considerably with each other except when the crack acceleration was large or the photoelastic fringe tilts changed drastically, where discrepancies amounted to 30~50%.
