The optical constants of an extremely thin film which are indispensable for precise evaluation of its nonlinear susceptibilities have been determined by using the Kramers-Kronig (KK) analysis of the transmittance spectrum. High quality thin films of poly (arylenevinylene) family were prepared from the soluble precursor polymers. The transmittance measurements were performed in the wavelength region from 340 to 1000 nm. KK analysis of the transmittance spectrum gave much accurate results than the analysis of the reflectance spectrum did.
