It is possible that open spaces, for example water surfaces and green fields, mitigate thermal environment in an urban area which is aggravated in summer. A series of field observation was conducted to examine the thermal effect of a park with a pond on the surrounding area. The park is “O-hori Park” which is one of the most familiar parks in Fukuoka city. There are two types of observation. One is wide area observation and the other is surrounding area observation. These two types were carried out under two kinds of the conditions of the pond, respectively. One is an ordinary condition, that is, the pond is filled with water. The other is the pond without water, which was realized when the water is pumped out to purify the pond. These two conditions are compared each other to make the effect of the water surface clear. The air temperature over the pond is lower than that of surrounding area. The further from the pond, the higher the air temperature. The air temperature difference is greater when the solar radiation increases. The cooling effect of the water surface reaches 300-400m in the surrounding area. The air temperature is cooler by l.0-1.5℃ up to 100m, and by 0.5℃ up to 400m. The vapor which is evaporated from the water surface is transported and diffused by the wind. The absolute humidity on the leeward of the pond is greater than that on the windward.
