The girl who served as subject in this report was trained for the regurality of excretion from three months old. In the following three months, her perfectionistic mother completed the training that she made her baby excrete holding her in her arms. This habit, however, disappeared before long, owing to a nurse-maid's handling of the baby. The maid forced the baby to excrete even when the bladder was not filled with urine, because she held to her employer's principle too seriously and was afraid of her failures. And then, the toilet habit which had been already built up was utterly spoiled contrary to the parents' intentions. When the baby was referred to our clinic at the age of nine months, the tendencies that she never urinated when held in arms, and that she wetted the diapers soon after she was put back on bed, was observed. In addition, such neurotic behaviors as thumb sucking or night terror ensued. Our main suggestions for parents were as follows: You should reform your attitudes which have restricted your babys physical and emotional release ; You should not interfere with her voluntary excretion, expecting to remove the feeling of fear or displeasure; You should try to restructure the once-established habit only on these bases. At the age of seventeen months, she could urinate again with her mother's help, expressing some pain with a violent cry, and from this day on her previous habit gradually tended towards the direction of recovery. After three-year-old she aquired the habit of self-support in urination. However, her neurotic habit, namely thumb-sucking and night terror, has remained as before, and with regard to her latest behaviors in the kindergarten, we can observe such characteristics as ill-natured , isolated, and exclusive. On the imcompleted stage of the pyramidal system, it was no more than the conditioned reflex depending on timeliness between the muscle tone of her bladder and her parents' handling. However, personality disorders and neurotic symptoms which were secondarily derived from parents' attitudes toward her were observed in her. Accordingly, we are to deal with her as a neurotic child, and our principal questions are not reforming of the previous habit, but ascertaining the genetic bases of neurotic hehavior disorders, and practising therapeutic treatments of them.
