Purpose: There have been some studies on the relationship between personality traits of athletes and the length of experience in athletic clubs. But, only a few of them have been concerned with whether there is a definite trend in the relationship between them , and between the traits and several other variables experienced in athletic clubs. The present paper aimes to explore the relationship between the personality traits of athletes on one hand, and, length of experience, objectives of the clubs, objectives perceived by club-members, and the role perceived by members themselves, on the other. Method: Yatabe-Guilford Personality Inventory and a questionnaire were administered to 450 male and 454 female student athletes in 11 Universities located in Aichi, Hyogo, kyoto, Osaka and Nara Prefectures, in June and July, 1961. Results: Main results obtained in the present study are as follows: (1) There is a tendency for male athletes to be more thinking-extrovert and aggressive and for female ones to be less nervous, as they experience club life longer. (2) Interesting trends were found in the relationship between personality traits of athletes and the objectives of the clubs, and also, between those and the objectives perceived by the individual members. (3) Personality traits of athletes tend to show some difference according to the degree of the perception of the importance of their r61e in the club. (4) These results, roughly interpreted, seems to suggest the greater desirability, in the study of personality traits of athletes, of the longitudinal approach than the crosssectional one.
