This paper is a study of the Spanish Language I class, which is an optional foreign language class offered by the Faculty of International Studies of Bunkyo University. This paper is based on Ura’s discussion on studies and consideration conducted in Spanish language classes of several universities in order to increase motivation for learning. In this paper, based on the current state of affairs of the faculty and from a student’s perspective, we seek to improve class by giving a clear goal as one complete class instead of taking the Spanish Language I Class as an introductory level class followed by II and III and considering that it is possible to motivate students to learn the Spanish language on a short term basis in one semester. First, the current state of affairs of the Spanish language class and new orientation is discussed. Orientation of class for increasing motivation for learning is clarifi ed based on previous studies on motivation for learning and surveys of needs of students conducted on the fi rst day of the Spanish Language I Class for 2008 and 2009 as well as the class registration pattern. textbooks and real-world situation in the class. By presenting one piece of teaching material of situational conversation per week, the lesson focuses on “Speak” and “Write”, so that a complete set of materials can be provided at the end of one semester. We considered the learning effect, focusing on the results of student questionnaires conducted at the end of the course and comments made by students and evaluated the class. The course received a high evaluation based on the results of questionnaires and comments by students. In conclusion, it can be said that students were motivated to learn due to an increase in learning time and broader interest in Spanish language.
