The industries in Nara Prefecture gradually have been making progress as apart of the outskirts of Han-shin industrial area. Generally speaking, however, they are not prosperous. Many factories are very small in their scales, which may be gathered from the fact that 83 percent of them have only less than ten workers. Considered by the types of industries, the order in their scales is the fiber, the lumber, the food stuff industry, some of which-for instance, the lumber industry-are deeply connected with the raw material industry. As another specific character, there remain many kinds of home industries which have old traditions. Recently there is a tendency that modern works are set up in several places. The geographical distribution of plants is dense in the Nara basin and the lower area of the river Yoshino, but very sparse in the mountainous places. When we consider about the water for the industrial purposes, the works which use it are as many as the ones which do not it. The consumed quantityof the water is different by the types of industries. It is much in the fiber, the chemical and the other factories which need the industrial water. Judging from the point of view of the water source, lots of factories make good use of well water which is underground water. Most of them are in the Nara basin. Next to the well water, the service water is also used in the Nara basin. A part of factories in the Yoshino mountainous district use the river water, the well water and the service water. In the quality of water, one is hard water and the other soft water. According to the aims of use, hard water is changed into soft water.
