The properties of Schiff base nickel(II) complexes with N,S donor atoms derived from 2-substituted benzothiazolines are reviewed in this paper. The reactivities of squareplanar nickel(II) complexes are dependent on the substituent groups and their positions on the pendant phenyl rings. A Schiff base nickel(II) complex with unsubstituted phenyl rings is converted into a nickel(II) complex with a non-innocent ligand, the electric structure of which can not be described by a common structural formula. A family of nickel(II) complexes with an extended p-conjugated system, which has been synthesized by a similar route as for nickel(II) complexes with non-innocent ligands using bisthiazolines as the starting material, is regarded as a potential multifunctional material for NIR-absorbing dye and conductor.
