• Perspectives of natural language understanding and dialogue systems are described. Question answering challenge proposed as one of NTCIR tasks is considered to be a variation of dialogue systems, the results of which show the difficulty of natural language understanding. It is difficult simply because the meaning of sentences cannot be represented adequately. Natural language processing has become one of the key technologies in the field of computer science, especially for Web related information processing. On he other hand, dialogue systems have been studied long since the advent of computers, and recognized how difficult it is to realize one. Here, we show some ideas targeting understanding and representingthe meaning of sentences in Japanese.
