This study overviews the background and current qualification system of social worker in Australia and describes the current situation and perspective of social welfare practitioners including social workers.Australia does not have a national license system of social worker like Japan, but it is necessary to be taken a bachelor's degree from universities accredited by AASW (Australian Association of Social Workers). The curriculum and field education in social work are substantial and standardized all over Australia by AASW guidelines. It is, however, concerned about maintenance of and progress in the quality of social workers after graduating from school. In terms of social work and human services workforce, it is phenomenal growth, but a significant diversification in the qualifications of practitioners has occurred. Such a change has brought about disadvantages including 'deprofessionalise' and reduction of labour costs of the human services sectors, influenced by economic rationalism and market pressures. It is expected that the AASW plays an important part of unity among other welfare practitioners in line with consideration of creating a basic professional standard and labour union.
