前回は「論述」とは何か,その定義と役割について簡単に述べ,論述の手順を示した「論述の手引き」そして評価表のサンプルを提示しました。今回は,さっそく具体的な論述例をご覧いただきながら,すぐれた論述とはどのような文章なのか,皆さんと一緒に考えてみたいと思います。用いる論述例はすべて,住谷の「論述の手引き」という授業で,学生が提出した実際の文章です。最初に短めの論述例を三つあげ検討してみましょう(Ⅰ)。そして最後に住谷の授業の課題でふつうに要求している分量の論述例をあげ,もしそれに添削を施すとしたらどうなるか,ズバリその例をお示ししましょう(Ⅱ)。In the previous paper, Part One, Professors Sumitani and Brown proposed a simple definition of the Amer-English essay, in light of the French dissertation and the Japanese ronbun. In addition, the essay was discussed in terms of its usefulness in both academic and non-academic contexts. Finally, the first paper presented a model guide to essay writing and, also, a guide to evaluating essays. In this paper, the authors will look at concrete examples of essays-and consider what exactly rates as a well-written essay.The essays discussed herein were chosen from student work done in Professor Sumitani's “Introduction to the Essay”class. This paper will look at and discuss three of those. Then, finally, there will be a discussion on the appropriate length and amount for the essay topic given in the above class. In the case that reductions were necessary, they will be highlighted and defended.
