One characteristic of the Shikoku pilgrimage is the wide variety of people who are able to set out upon it. This sense of welcome finds its roots in the Daishi belief. This stands in antithesis to the modern Japanese society, in which people are valued by their position and ability. The purpose of walking in the pilgrimage is the recovery of the wellness of the whole body and of the senses. From the point of view of human relationships, it could be said that the pilgrimage encourages a reevaluation of the meaning of family and of social status by allowing the pilgrim to set out alone, walking and thinking outside of their usual influence. In this paper, we attempt to study middle-aged walking pilgrims. But nowadays in Shikoku, there are many kinds of walking pilgrims, including young people, women and married couples. This is a topic which deserves more study in the future.
