Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is a chronic progressive myelopathy characterized by spastic paraparesis and sphincter dysfunction observed in a minority of HTLV-1 infected individuals. Previously studies indicated that HTLV-1 Tax subtype, several HLA and non-HLA genes are closely associated with the development of HAM/TSP. Two HAM/TSP associated alleles, HLA-A^*02 and HLA-DRB1^*0101 can recognize immunodominant HTLV-1 epitopes, and some HAM/TSP associated non-HLA genes are trans-activated by HTLV-1 Tax protein. Namely, complex virus-host interactions play an important role in determining the risk of HAM/TSP.
