We investigated levels of electromagnetic fields at extremely low frequencies in various living environments. The measuring instrument was EMDEX Lite Meter of Enertech Co. in the US, which was optimized for personal and long-term magnetic field exposure monitoring. Forty-eight volunteers living in Sapporo City and in the suburbs of Sapporo carried the instrument with them to measure continuously the changes of magnetic flux densities for one week in 2004 to 2006. The following results were obtained: 1. The average of the data obtained was 0.08μT. The maximum value was 110μT. 2. Approximately 90 percent of the whole data was under 0.3μT, and approximately 60 percent was under 0.03μ/T. 3. The magnetic field in a room located near a leading wire with an electric current was about 0.5μT, higher than that in a room without it. 4. The exposure in a group of electrical engineers intermittently showed 10-20μT at the maximum. 5. The exposure in electric trains intermittently showed about 10μT at the maximum. 6. Hybrid cars gave variable magnetic flux densities depending on different models.
