The effect of low temperature (4℃) on potassium contracture in single twitch muscle fibers of the frog was studied and the following results were obtained. 1. The activation curve of potassium contracture was shifted toward the left at lower concentrations of potassium, and was shifted downward at higher concentrations of potassium by lowering the temperature from 24 to 4℃. 2. The time course (plateau and spontaneous relaxation phases) of potassium contracture was markedly prolonged at low temperature. 3. The plateau tension of caffeine contracture was inhibited by about 30% at low temperature. From these results, the mechanism of the effect of low temperature on the contracture induced with potassium in lower and higher concentrations was discussed.
