Succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) and phosphorylase (PhR) activities in the flexor carpi radialis muscle (FCRM) of the male frog during the mating season were studied histochemically, and the following results were obtained. 1) On the basis of the variation between the fibers in the activity of SDH, FCRM fibers could be classified into three types; fibers with high, intermediate and low SDH activities. 2) FCRM fibers could also be classified into three types by the variation in the activity of PhR, namely fibers with high, intermediate and low PhR activities. 3) The relationship between the SDH and PhR activities in the FCRM fiber was reciprocal, fibers with high SDH activity showed low PhR activity and fibers with low SDH activity showed high PhR activity. 4) FCRM contained fibers with high, intermediate and low SDH activities in numbers of 57.5, 28.8 and 13.7%, respectively. Mean diameter of each type of the fibers was 47.4, 67.6 and 85.0μ, respectively.
