After the defeat of Japan, ISHIHARA Yoshiro (1915-77) was detained for 8 years in Siberia, and returned by amnesty with the Stalin death in 1953. It is generally said that Ishihara's poesies treat the motif of experiences in Siberia. He had the theme that runs through on all his poesies. The theme is ‘coexistence’ or ‘solitude’. In the 1970's, he published his works not only by poetry but also in prose. Many prose works are reflection of memories in Siberian camp, incidents after his return to Japan, and comments on his works. He remarked “ It takes about 15 years till I began to write in prose. For the period of such years, I have internalized my external experiences and established my subject that should deserve to ask. That is, I made trial and error”. (‘About “Nostalgia and Seas”’) The style and the matter are not separable but united elements. Poetry is extraordinary style of language. Prose is ordinary style. In Ishihara's works, how can we trace his experiences which unite those two styles? Can we find the origin of his poetic energy? This paper reveals his narcissism as the creative energy for poesies.
