This paper presents an examination what affects job satisfaction, utilizing the data for this secondary analysis in 2004 from the Social Science Japan Data Archive (SSJDA) of The University of Tokyo. The aims of this study were to ascertain the relationship between job satisfaction or dissatisfaction and motivating a person by covariance analysis. I have attempted to estimate what factors have a stronger effect on job satisfaction. Job satisfaction has been defined by Frederick Herzberg (1959) as a motivated state resulting from an appraisal of one's job or an affective reaction to one's job. However, the assumption was made in this study that job satisfaction is affected by not only the employee's attitude to the job itself but also by the stress of the job or his or her life satisfaction. In this hypothesis, the job satisfaction is explained by a five-segment structural model. So that there are a four-segment of the satisfaction from the “job itself”, the “life satisfaction” of Robert Hoppock (1935), the “achievement” by job itself and the “workplace”, and moreover, one-segment of the job “stress” in the workplace. The main finding in this study was that job satisfaction is unexpectedly affected by the life satisfaction, which is as important as job satisfaction being affected by the employee's attitude to the job itself.
