The purpose of this paper is to examine the way a story arises through sandplay therapy. The subjects were twenty four university students. Each of them was required to set up a scene in a sandbox and to write down images that came to his/her mind through this process. Then he/she was interviewed about the experience. The data from the interviews were analyzed by the Modified Grounded Theory Approach. As a result, I identified some trends associated with the story: (1) There were two types of stories. One was created by spontaneous images, and another by the conscious plan. (2) The story tended to become structured text, but not always the case. (3) The story may slip out of primary images. Although the clinical significance of the story was confirmed, on the other hand, we must keep in mind the possibility that the story causes a gap or a strain from the original images.
