(1) 68 pieces of the timbers used for important old temples and shrine, i. e. Horyuji, Todaiji, Fudoin, Kairyuoji and Soinomiagatani-imasu shurin, are studied anatomically. The most of them are Chamaecyparis obtusa, followed by Cryptomeria japonica and Pinus (Diploxylon). A few samples are Abies firma, Tsuga Sieboldii and Sciadopitys verticillata. Repaired timbers are common Chamaecyparis obtusa and Pinus (Diploxylon). (2) About 6000 pieces of wooden-samples unearthed in the old site of Fujiwara palace are studied anatomically. Identified wood species are : Torreya nucifera, Abies firma, Tsuga Sieboldii, Sciadopitys verticillata, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Quercus (Cyclobalanopsis) sp., Betula sp., Castanopsis cuspidata, Zelkova serrata, Celtis sinensis, Buxus microphylla var. japonica, and Deutzia crenata.
