本稿で取り上げるのは,次の(1)のhuman ballastというメタファーの解釈である:(1)A very poignant example of what I mean by high tech/high touch is the response to the introduction of high technology of life-sustaining equipment in hospitals. We couldn't handle the intrusion of this high technology into such a sensitive area of our lives without creating some HUMAN BALLAST. So we got very interested in the quality of death, which led to the hospice movement, now widespread in this country. (John Naisbitt, Megatrends, Warner Books, 1984, p.38)
