The occurrence of a rare labrid fish, Macropharyngodon moyeri Shepard and Meyer, 1978, is reported based on two specimens from Kuchierabu-jima of Kagoshima and Okinoshima of Kochi Prefectures, southwestern district of Japan. Although the species has previously been known from Miyake-jima of the Izu Islands, Izu Peninsula, Okinawa and Taiwan, the present record fills the disrupting distribution of the species from the Pacific coasts of central Japan and from the Ryukyu Islands and Taiwan.
