The purpose of this paper is to investigate the patterns of decision-making process in Japanese higher educational institutions. The data used here were obtained through the questionnaire survey on the attitudes of more than 1,800 faculty members in approximately 100 national, prefectural, and private universities toward general aspects of institutional management. These were collected by IMHE Project Team in Research Institute for Higher Education of Hiroshima University (1974). The data were analyzed by Multiple Classification Analysis (MCA) incorporated in the Statistical Package for Social Science. The four nonmetric independent variables (factors) used here are the age and status of respondents, and the founder and size of institution. The dependent variables include the composition and conduct of faculty meetings, members' interest in and satisfaction with governmental administration of higher education, and so on. Results of the analysis show that the status of faculty members tends to have strong net effects on most of the dependent variables, especially on those related to the composition and management of faculty meetings. In addition to this factor both the founder and size of institution have influence on the variables related to university governance, although these two factors have complicated interactions.
