This report presents the results of an investigation of buildings which were mentioned by students as either the most or least favorite ones at Mansfield College in particular and Oxford University in general, an investigation that has been described in a previous paper entitled "Student Evaluation of the Architectural Environment at Mansfield College in the UK."The purpose of this investigation was to try to understand why these buildings were either the most or least favored through the analysis of those characteristics that seem to set them apart for either better or worse.Direct observation was the method mainly employed in the survey. I visited the buildings under consideration and then examined their characteristics on the basis of the results of observations made on site. Because of certain restrictions, the results of the analysis are necessarily qualitative. It is hard to pinpoint those elements that provide “aesthetic pleasure" - a major criterion in deciding what is or is not liked. The exterior, but particularly the appearance of the interior (form, materials, furnishings and incidental equipment, lighting and the use to which the space has been put) are influencial. Apparently, “gorgeousness" is an unrelated factor. Again, appearance is valued more than functionality that has been needlessly enhanced. Moreover, what is old is liked and what is new is often not. Consequentially, being able to sense the historicity of a built space contributes greatly to its apprecation. I also make reference in this paper as to the reason why many students who spend time in historic buildings derive not only aesthetic pleasure but find that the ambience of a building affects their will to study and their perception of history.
