Recently immersion education has come to be seen as one of the best methods for students to learn English. There is quite a lot literature on immersion education in elementary to high school levels, however, there is only a little on the immersion education in universities. Above all, there are very few experimental studies on it. The author carried out experimental lectures in English and compared the understanding of these lectures by ordinary Japanese university students with their understanding of lectures in their first language (Japanese). The results showed the correlation was very high between the understanding in English lectures and Japanese lectures. In other words, the students who can understand the content of a lecture in Japanese can understand a lecture in English as well, and the students who cannot understand in English cannot understand even in Japanese. The results of students' evaluation, which was carried out at the same time, indicated that giving lectures in English is more appropriate for general courses than special courses.
