A disc with a hyperbolic profile whose thickness varies as 1/rά, is widely used in steam turbine practices. When such a disc rotates with angularacceleration, it is important to find the general expressions of the principal stresses produced in it in order to see the effects of the acceleration. According to the results of our analytical calculations, a greater increase in the principal stress is justified than when it rotates at a constant speed and this is mainly due to the shearing stress produced by tangential intertia force exerted on a mass element of the disc. By the principle of superposition, the shearing stress and the raidal and hoop normal stress components produced by centrifugal force are superposed and the principal stresses can be found. Using the various theories concerning the failure of materials, the limiting curves of failure are deduced and compared with each other. Finally it is pointed out that our method of analysis may also be applied to the case where the disc has a variable thickness expressed by the equation h =Arά • ( 1—μrs) k , which Dr. T. Suhara has already proposed. The latter case is often met with in gas turbine practis.
