Salt Lake Valley is located at the east end of the Great Basin that is one of the typical inner continental dry areas of the U. S. The Salt Lake City is situated at the focal point of the Salt Lake Valley. Her geographical location is 40 047'N, 111°58'W, and its altitude is 1, 288m. It has a mild average annual temperature like that of Matsumoto City (10. 9℃), but annual rainfall is very small (391. 8mm) and has a feature of the semi-arid climate. The City was founded and was formed its urbanized area on the right bank of the Jordan River, flowing into Great Salt Lake in the north. The Wasatch Range limits city's eastern urban fringe like very high blocking wall. But, the Range being over 3,000 meters above sea level, had been very attractive for the people of the Salt Lake City with its many creeks with adequate and pure quality water resource. Under the semi-arid climate, it was inevitable for the people of the city and valley to develop and manage water resources effectively and ingeniously. Salt Lake City was settled in 1847 by the Mormon Pioneers. During the early history of the settlement, the flow of City Creek Canyon water was diverted and supplyed for urban use through the open irrigation ditches. The first cast iron pipe was laid bringing piped water into urban area in 1875. Followingly great nany endeavor was devoted and the people have successfully attained high performances to secure water for municipal use, irrigation use, and industrial use through the development of artesian wells, the construction of Jordan and The Salt Lake City Canal and the making of water exchange agreements with many mountain flow irrigation ditches, the carryout of the Provo River Project. The Salt Lake Valley's future water supply will be developed by the Central Utah Project to meet the Valley's demand.
