The author's attempt in this paper is to interpret "The Woodman and the Nightingale" by clarifying the symbolic meanings of the two key words, 'woodman' and 'nightingale.' Having used available materials beside the poem, he concludes: that the 'nightingale' symbolizes a poet or his imagination, while the 'woodman' represents a mere reasoner or his reason, and that, if so, the poem must largely involve Shelley's protest against most of his contemporaries who, employed in their worldly pursuits, looked with less regard upon a poet and poetry as an expression of his imagination.
