The Minami-Iyo region includes Nishiuwa-Gun, Higashi-uwa-Gun, Kita-uwa-gun and Minami-uwa-gun. Generally speaking, the chief industry of this region is agriculture and, in the coastal area, agriculture combined with fishery. In this region, the fishing industry of Nishiumi-cho, which occupies the most southern position, is highly developed. The industrial population of this small village was 8,273: that of fishery men, 1425, in 1947. Since 1951 there have been 23 corporations which are catching serdines and employing 1,181 fishery men, and 9 corporations catching bouitos and employing 147 fishery men. One corporation that handles serdines employs 40〜50 fishery men and has several vessels and catches fish by the ring-nets at night in the Uwa-sea. One of the bonito fishery corporations is found to have one mortor vessel, employing 20 fishery men, whose fishing-ground is off the coast of Ashizuri. Recently prices of fish have fallen down but prices of fishery instruments remained high-priced, so that the management of these fishery corporations seems to have become quite difficult and several corporations seem unable to pay wages. Fishery men are getting wages by the system of share, and the wage is very cheap and subject to change. Most fishery men have at the same time small farms and their wives are farmers.
