An experimental investigation of compressional property of weft and warp knitted fabrics is reported. When the thickness-compressional load curves for several knitted fabrics are drawn in semilog graph paper, the straight lines which bend at two or three points are found. The mechanisms of compressional deformation of knitted fabrics are discussed in detail, and made it clear that the deformation is divided into two main parts, that is, the deformation due to change of loop shape to be in a plane normal to the plane of fabric which dominates the initial compression, and the compressional deformation of yarns at crossover point which occupies the major portion of the compression under high pressure. This result is verified with experiment in the case of hand-knitted fabric. Finally, the validity for the values of thickness of knitted fabrics measured by JIS method is examined by comparing with the values already obtained when the compressional property was measured.
