The compressional property of plain-knitted fabrics is theoretically calculated from its structure and yarn properties on the basis of the experimental facts reported in the previous paper. A structural model of plain-knitted fabric is presented to perform the calculation. The compressional deformation is divided into two parts, that is, the deformation of circular arc to be in a plane normal to the plane of fabric and the deformation of yans in the crossover region, in the same manner as Kawabata's method developed to analyze theoretically the tensile properties of knitted fabric. An equation to calculate the compressional property of circular arc is derived as an elastica problem. Then, the compressional properties of arcs and yarns are composed. This calculation is shown to be in good agreement with experimental value for a hand-knitted fabric with low stitch density. However, the theoretical problem for compression of yarns in crossover region is left unsolved in this paper.
