Irradiation of 2,4,4,6-tetramethylheptane-3,5-dione (7) in hexane gave monoketones (9), (10), and (12), the enol ester (11), and 1,4-diketones (13) and (14). Similar irradiation of 3,3,5-trimethylhexane-2,4-dione (8) gave monoketones (10), (15), and (16), and 1,4-diketones (6),(13),(1T), and (18). Compounds 6, 10, 11, 13,and 15-17 were recombination products of radicals generated in the type reaction. Compounds 9, 12, 14, and 18 might be formed via the reaction of radicals generated in the type II reaction of 6, 13, or 17 with an isopropyl radical arising in the reaction system.
